The
Malawi Sexual reproductive and rights policy expired the year 2022 which means
it is outdated hence the need to review it now. In the year 2009, the
Government of Malawi adopted the sexual and reproductive Health and Rights
policy hence the need for reviewing the policy and incorporate new WHO
guidelines.
The
year 2016 the Law commission come up with report on abortion in Malawi and
recommendations together with drafted of TOP Bill. The report of Law commission
says that number of studies have been conducted to examine the abortion
situation in Malawi and these are strategic assessment of unsafe abortion in
Malawi, social consequences of unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion in
Malawi. the incidence of abortion in Malawi and cost analysis of abortion in
Malawi. According to the finding from these studies between 29,000 and 47,000
women sought treatment for complication of abortion. the studies further reveal
that 48,600-86,000 unsafe abortions are procured each year which translates
into 11 abortions for every 100 babies born alive. The consequences are that in
Malawi about 17% of all maternal deaths are due to complications of abortion

Masauko Gama is from Jeremani village traditional authority Mzikuona, Mzimba
district. he came to mzuzu prison last
year. before I came I used to drink and drink beer a lot when I started serving
my sentences I was smuggling marijuana a lot was taking advantage when we go
out to work or doing some other activity. The beer was hard to smuggle so I
choose marijuana was easy to carry and hide. When the prison warden finds me
smoking or I got caught smuggling marijuana I was whipped and even pulled some
muds it didn’t help because I was addicted. When the youth pop came I started
learning some things. I paid much attention on this one topic called drug and
substance abuse I stopped all my wrong doings in this prison. And the relationship
between me and prison warden is very good since I stopped smoking through the
Youth pop masp club sessions. I also used to be an introvert was not
associating with anyone here but now am able to interact with my friends, and
even our prison warden and am even able to encourage those that are doing bad
inside the prison. When I finish serving my sentence
the community will see the change in me.
